READER QUESTIONS

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Well, I have never really contended with this elusive 'writer's block' so I am not really sure what it is that not being able to write is like. If by writer's block one is suggesting that the right words on a topic do not flow in the manner in which one hopes they would, then in those particular situations, I write anyway. I write with no concerns for grammar, syntax, flow of thought, etc. I have found that in the rewriting, after having done deeper research on a topic, for instance, it is then that the better formulated thoughts flow. When I sat to begin writing poetry after nearly two decades, it was reading through an exhaustive anthology of various poets, styles, periods, genres, and countries that I was able to find a muse for poetry again.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

I am flattered beyond measure that there are those who find my creativity pleasurable enough to part with their hard-earned money to purchase it and then tell their friends and families about my books.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Read. A lot. Then write. Then rewrite.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently writing new poetry for a collection of poems I plan to publish early next year.

How do you get inspired to write?

If, when you say write, you are referring to poetry, I only write when there is a muse for writing poetry. I can usually find my muse while reading something literary. It is not all literary works which can move me, I just know it when I am reading it. I have been moved to write after having listened to certain music which provokes deeply felt emotions.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

My most recent book "Gumbo: The Poetry and Artworks" is a collection of poetry written shortly after publishing my first book of poems, "Bricks: A Collection of Poetry". One of my readers knew that I had dabbed a bit in art works and suggested that I combine some of those works with my most recent poetry.
